What is DEKAFOK?
DEKAFOK (Sea Turtles, Mediterranean Monk Seals and Sand Lilies Coastal Protection Association) is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to preserving biodiversity along Türkiye’s Mediterranean coastline.
The organisation focuses on protecting vulnerable coastal species, raising environmental awareness, and supporting sustainable tourism. Through scientific research, field observations, and volunteer programmes, DEKAFOK actively contributes to nature conservation efforts.
The Story Behind the Foundation
The foundations of DEKAFOK were laid when its founder, Seher Akyol and her son Taha encountered a deceased sea turtle on the shore. This moment marked the beginning of their individual efforts to protect sea turtles in the region, which later evolved into an organised initiative.
Established in 2020 in Manavgat, DEKAFOK primarily operates along the Side coastline, Manavgat shores, the Sorgun area, and key sea turtle nesting beaches.
The founders’ mission is to protect the rapidly declining natural assets of the Mediterranean coast and ensure their preservation for future generations. In line with this vision, the organisation collaborates with local authorities, the tourism sector, and volunteers. DEKAFOK also contributes to raising environmental awareness through educational programmes for students and visitors.
Protected Species
DEKAFOK’s work focuses on three key species that are essential to the Mediterranean coastal ecosystem:
Why is DEKAFOK Important?
The Mediterranean coastline, particularly in and around Side, is one of the most significant nesting areas for sea turtles. However, this delicate natural cycle is far more fragile than it may appear.
A simple light on the beach at night, a small piece of litter left on the sand, or increased human activity can directly impact nesting and the survival of hatchlings.
Under natural conditions, hatchlings follow the light of the horizon to reach the sea. Artificial lighting, however, can disorient them, often preventing them from surviving.
This is where DEKAFOK plays a crucial role. Beyond protection, the organisation ensures that nature’s cycle continues in a healthy and sustainable way. Each year, thousands of hatchlings successfully reach the sea thanks to these dedicated efforts.
How Do DEKAFOK’s Activities Operate?
DEKAFOK’s work intensifies between May and September, during the sea turtle nesting season.
Key activities include:
Through these efforts, both nature conservation and sustainable tourism are actively supported.
A More Conscious Holiday Experience
When staying in Side, you are part of a unique natural ecosystem. The tracks you may notice on the beach at night could belong to a nesting sea turtle.
Thanks to DEKAFOK’s initiatives:
This transforms your holiday into not only a time of relaxation, but also a meaningful and conscious experience.
How You Can Contribute?
Small actions during your holiday can make a meaningful difference:
Every mindful action contributes to protecting the natural beauty of the Mediterranean and makes your holiday experience even more meaningful.
